Welcome to Women Wednesday

Women Wednesday is a weekly opportunity to highlight inspiring women from camp, our community, and beyond.

This week we had the opportunity to sit down with Dana Battaglia, owner and lead esthetician at Girl on the Go! Night Spa in Golden Hill.

Dana Battaglia

Where do you call home?
I live in Golden Hill - only a few blocks away from my business.

What was the first job you truly felt excited about?
Oddly enough, the first job I was so excited about also turned out to be my worst job. I was hired at an upscale day spa in San Diego not too long after I graduated cosmetology school. I was thrilled to not only be working in the industry I loved, but also to be a part of what appeared to be such a dynamic company. I soon learned it was an extremely toxic working environment - so much so that I almost considered leaving the skincare industry altogether.

How did your business come to be after that experience?
I took a desk job after leaving that spa and was soon being asked by friends and family if I could provide waxing and facials for them. I decided to start offering services out of my home and regained my confidence. Several months later I came across the perfect commercial space near my home in Golden Hill and felt it was fate. I filed for a business license and moved in right away – this is when Girl on the Go was born! Because I continued to work my day job, I offered skincare services and waxing during the evening and on the weekends only. I quickly realized this was an untapped market of working professionals, busy parents, and military personnel that wanted to treat themselves but had a difficult time making appointments during traditional spa hours.

We’re always told how great it is to pursue your passion, but we all know it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wish I could say that it has been a smooth road but with any business, there are always up and downs. The first person who ever called to make an appointment ended up no-showing me. It was very disappointing but it taught me a lot about the industry very early on.

One of the biggest struggles I’ve had was making the decision to revamp our menu and do a complete renovation of the spa a year and a half ago. The spa was doing great and we have so many amazing clients but my dream has always been to focus on health and wellness.

I had to steer my focus toward my goals and make some huge changes that would forever change the direction of Girl on the Go. When I look back on my decision today though, I am absolutely certain it was the right one to make.

What would you like to see yourself doing in 5 years?
My biggest career goal is to run a skincare academy where I can lead the next generation of wellness-focused estheticians. I would like to be working towards that within the next 5 years, however I am also 6 weeks away from having my first child! I can only imagine how much life is going to change once my husband and I welcome our daughter into this world, but I'm strongly devoted to my passions and balancing that with my family and home life.
