A Sweeter Side to Health

This week we had the opportunity to chat with Emily Josenhans, founder of Domaine Sante, a sustainably sourced, natural sweetener from California wine country grapes. Find their delicious products at retail shops, farmer's markets, and in cocktails throughout San Diego.

Emily Josenhans

Where do you call home?
I live in North Park, which is nostalgic to the launch of our products at the North Park Farmer's Market.

What was the first job you felt excited about?
I went to school for nutrition and worked in hospitals on the clinical side of nutritional consulting, which was never my passion. I thankfully transitioned to private and group consulting when I moved to San Diego and loved the direct interaction and impact I had on clients' diets and effectively their lifestyles as well. It was so rewarding to see the success of my clients on so many different levels of health and wellness, which was an extremely exciting endeavor.

Why and how did Domaine Sante get started?
Many of my clients had issues related to sugar intake and I found myself constantly combating sugar without any avail. When the opportunity of Grape Nectar arose via my husband's food and beverage background, we not only saw the opportunity to stir up the sugar industry in the restaurant and bar setting, but also the possibility of providing every consumer with a healthier AND delicious sugar alternative. Something seriously cool that I had never been able to offer to my clients or find myself. And we absolutely love French wine, so it came natural to develop a related product.

We’re always told how great it is to pursue your passion, but we all know it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don't think any entrepreneurs path is "easy", but I definitely think the passion and effort you put into your business reflects a good portion of the eventual outcome of the business. My passion in sharing better health in a new and interesting package, which has posed more difficulties than I could have imagined, but it makes the success that much sweeter (no pun intended).

What would you like to see yourself doing in 5 years?
I look forward to the consumer marketplace in five years and I hope that the trend for high quality, sustainable products only increases, giving more opportunity for products like ours to flourish. I also hope Grape Nectar has an international reach and I am continuing to disrupt the food industry for the better health of all around the world.
